Bret; is there any possibility that Joe will renegotiate the deal for less money so the Hawks can have some wiggle room during FA? You know, like take $10-$15 mill' less so we can fill out the roster without breaking threshold territory?
The entire reason behind Joe taking the max, as I understand it, is the extra millions he can make on this deal.
This whole "we can just trade him down the line and be fine" idea is ludicrous. What would we have to take back for a $20 mln a year contract for an aging shooting guard? More bad contracts.
T-Mac and Michael Redd should be huge warning flags for this organization, especially since you can get 80-90 percent of the production from other players at the position for 1/2 to 2/3's the price.
Let's face it Joe liked what he heard cuz he heard $119 million. And Joe liked mike woodson letting him ball hog, and there's no way Joe will choose the hawks over knicks and dantoni if he's only looking at who's the coach.
Today was the case of Joe feeling like he deserves a lot of money, just like when he was in Phoenix. This is also the case of ownership seeing that they only had this as their one move and didn't want to be embarassed if Joe left for NY.

Agreed on those dates that end with 2010, we'll see about those dates that end with 2012 or 2013.
I suspect trading a famously and widely criticized contract may not be as easy an escape clause as the organization suspects.

Ben --
I agree. The problem is that ownership views responsible, long-term strategic decision-making as a potential source of embarrassment.
And I have no problem at all with Joe for taking the money.
News of the offer is already the laughing stock of the league commentariat, it seems.
Nice way to start an offseason.
