Contracts become guaranteed for the rest of the season on Monday so this will save the team some money and free up a roster spot to sign someone to a 10-day contract (or a series of someones to 10-day contracts) as soon as Monday.
I presume either Larry Drew didn't know this was coming or the team intends to re-sign Wilkins on a 10-day contract next week as Wilkins played most of the fourth quarter last night.

Seems like they may have released the wrong marginally useful SG/SF.
So you're saying a third guaranteed year for Mo Evans wasn't absolutely necessary?
